Being part of Obama's Image Machine in Berlin

The recent complaint of the White House Press Photographers about their working conditions and not being granted access to cover some angles and moments in the presidential life, reminded me of Mr Obama’s visit to Germany last June. It was one of those rare events when I had applied for accreditation to cover a daily politics event on my own. Once on the scene I was forced to realize again – as on other events photographing top politicians – that we were allowed to cover certain parts of Mr Obama’s visit but didn’t have much possibility to author our pictures, …

Does the photojournalistic agency make sense in the 21st century?

Last year I was granted a stipend to follow projects from September 2012 to May 2013 at the University of Wales, Newport. Except my photographic essay on The Legacy of Coal in South Wales I performed a research on the situation of photojournalistic agencies in today’s market. Below I publish the conclusion I came to, as it becomes topical by the news of Magnum Photos preparing a paid-for online membership platform. Does the photojournalistic agency make sense in the 21st century? “It’s about showing up, and being there above all…” (David Burnett, 2013) Photo agencies rose in the 20th century …

I will greet the sun again – Nasrin Sotoudeh released

The Iranian Lawyer and co-winner of the 2012 Sakharov Prize of the European Parliament, Nasrin Sotoudeh was released from prison on Wednesday, September 18th, 2013. Back in July when I took this portrait of her, she was on a temporary leave from the prison, and nobody could imagine such a quick release as she had still four years of sentence to serve. But there was hope, as the calligraphy on her scarf reads: “I will greet the sun again”, a quote from the famous Iranian modernist poet Forough Farrokhzad.

Backstage news…

Whilst photographing the project about the waste disposal in Siberian Tomsk,  the local TV produced a short clip on my working. Although it is available in Russian only, I hope you enjoy it. http://tv.tsu.ru/news/detail/?id=1453#video

Staatsakt.Staatstrauer.Staatsverantwortung

German Chancellor Angela Merkel received Nicolas Sarkozy in the Chancellery in Berlin on Sunday afternoon to discuss ways stabilizing the Euro. And I managed to be shown in the Tagesschau, (German daily news show) whilst photographing this picture.

Mr Vatican

Whatever he says, carries weight, as he is ” The Vatican” in the Press During the visit of the Pope in Germany I had less than one minute time to make a portrait of Federico Lombardi, the director of the Holy See Press Office, i.e. the spokesman of the Vatican. He also is the chief of Radio Vatican and the Television of Vatican CTV.
